Bio

Manoj Baviskar was born in Aurangabad and works in Baroda, India. He received his post-diploma in Fine Arts-Creative Sculpture from M.S. University and has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the National Art Exhibitions of Lalit Kala Academy & Tamrind art gallery, NY. His work takes shape from his immediate surroundings. It reflects the cultural and social aspects of that environment. It is time-based and often displays the process. The choices of materials, depending on availability differ according to the place and the situation. In recent years, he has been performing, using his body and voice in spaces, as well as on video, in photographs and installations. His performances are atmospheric, sometimes ritualistic and usually contain props. They show the cyclical circles of destruction and renewal, as well as formal and conceptual ideas and the framework of personal references that inform the fragile divide between his life and his art. He has been awarded the 2011 UNESCO/Aschberg Brusaries for Visual Artists residency at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, CA.  He has had major performances at the Theertha International Artist Residency in Colombo Sri Lanka, the Shatana International Site Specific Workshop in Shatana, Jordan, and the International Site Specific Workshop organized by Pariwartan, Gowahati, India.
